"Swing and a drive! Get up ball, get out of here, and gone!"
Toronto Blue Jays fans will no longer be hearing that iconic call, as broadcaster Buck Martinez announced his retirement from the booth on Friday.
"After the World Series, my wife Arlene and I had plenty of time to think about the past and look forward to the future. After many heartfelt conversations, we both decided it was time for me to step out of the booth and enjoy the years ahead," Martinez said in a press release.
The 77-year-old's career with the Blue Jays began in 1981, when he was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers. He proceeded to spend over 40 years involved with the organization in one way or another, from player (1981-1986), to manager (2001-2002), to voice of the franchise.
Martinez became synonymous with Blue Jays baseball, his call being the backdrop of ballgames in living rooms across Canada for multiple generations. The baseball world swiftly took to social media to pay tribute to his legendary career.
